Mid Bedfordshire MP Blake Stephenson has called out the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for making vulnerable pensioners choose between heating and eating this winter.
The Labour Government has removed universal access to Winter Fuel Payments for pensioners meaning a pensioner earning as little as £11,350 a year would no longer receive the payment of up to £300.
Mr Stephenson voted against the change in the House of Commons yesterday, but Labour MPs forced the cut through just months before winter.
In a powerful intervention at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday (11th September), the newly elected local MP highlighted the stark choice vulnerable pensioners in Mid Bedfordshire may have to make this winter.
Speaking in the House Of Commons, Blake Stephenson MP said: “If the Prime Minister was a pensioner earning £11,350 this year and receiving no Winter Fuel Payment, what would he prioritise this Christmas; heating or eating?”
Sir Keir Starmer did not answer the question.
After leaving the chamber following Prime Minister’s Questions, Blake added: “I’m appalled by Labour’s decision to take the Winter Fuel Payment away from so many pensioners in Mid Bedfordshire who rely on it.
“In the House Of Commons today, the Prime Minister failed to accept accountability for Labour’s black hole in pensioners’ household finances.”
