Local MP Blake Stephenson has urged pensioners across Mid Bedfordshire to check if they are eligible for benefits such as pension credit as the Government's plan to cut access to Winter Fuel Allowance looms.
The Government is set to remove universal access to Winter Fuel Allowance for pensioners, which unexpectedly impacts a significant number of pensioners across Mid Bedfordshire with little time to plan for winter.
Age UK estimates this will affect thousands of pensioners in the constituency, but those receiving pension credit will still be eligible for Winter Fuel Allowance. So Blake is encouraging pensioners to check if they're eligible and sign up if they are to help ease the burden this winter.
Blake Stephenson, the MP for Mid Bedfordshire, said: "No pensioner should be sitting at home worrying about whether they will be able to afford to heat their home this winter, and whilst colleagues and I will do our best to scrutinise and influence the new Government, I would urge all pensioners to apply for the benefits they are entitled to such as Pension Credit, which would re-open access to a Winter Fuel Allowance."
