I am grateful to Central Bedfordshire Council for providing me with updates on the reports of a smell of gas in Flitwick today (Wednesday 4 September 2024).
I'm pleased that after checks from Cadent Gas, the Fire Service and the Council no further action was required.
"CBC deployed officers to Flitwick to liaise with the Fire Service and Cadent Gas.
There is still no confirmation of the cause of the smell.
Many premises like schools and our library responded using their standard procedures on smelling gas and evacuating the building until it was checked by Cadent and deemed safe.
CBC worked with our local Thermal Drone voluntary group to check for any unusual heat sources in the area and did not see anything of concern.
We have not had any recent reports to the Council that people can still smell gas. The fire service stood down their operations early afternoon.
If anyone thinks they do smell gas, they should report it immediately to the gas emergency service on 0800 111 999. They could be smelling something which is not connected to these reports, and it is important that it gets checked out."
