The Labour Government has admitted to local MP Blake Stephenson that it has not completed an analysis of the impact of its new VAT on education policy for schools across Mid Bedfordshire.
Blake Stephenson MP is concerned the new policy will drive students out of independent schools and overwhelm state schools, risking the quality of educations for all young people across the constituency.
To understand the potential impact, he wrote to the Department for Education asking for its analysis.
Education Minister Stephen Morgan responded: "The department has made no estimate of the number of pupils in Bedfordshire who will leave the independent school system as a result of VAT on school fees."
Blake Stephenson MP said: "The Government has admitted to me that it hasn't considered the impact of its policy to introduce VAT on school fees in Bedfordshire.
"I'm concerned the plans could see more students entering the state school system and overwhelming it, causing a decline in education standards for all, so I'm shocked the Government has failed to assess the potential impact locally."
